In this big house City Montesson (78) a basement partially buried was originally used in storage and boiler room. We turned into large and bright living wide open to the garden.
The old basement (in red) was a dark technical space and low ceiling (1.90 m). But this piece of nearly 30 m² was placed between the entrance (porch and courtyard in purple) and a beautiful small city garden. It therefore offered a good potential to become a beautiful living room.
The first step was to rethink the entry. It was originally composed of an open porch to the winds and a poorly covered courtyard. We closed the porch by a glass workshop, to ensure effective sealing with the outside, and recreated a roof on top of the small yard. The latter (now heated and topped with three large skylights) is open stairs distributing all levels: as a signal tower, it is an interior space that is treated as an outdoor courtyard (paved floor, stone walls ...).
From this courtyard, a few steps lead down into the living room (reception area), another stone staircase leads to the dining room / kitchen.
The project consisted in a second time disburse the basement 60 cm (in red on turns). In winner ceilings, we also gain the ability to the light in in the basement. We also dug at the foot of the garden facade to create a English class and install on the future living a bay window.
Since garden a staircase descends to the living room, another rises to the dining room.
