Thinkstock

Small reminder of the steps to follow: - If the painting surface is dirty (grease, grime, nicotine, fingerprints ...), it will wash it with a mild detergent diluted in water, always ending with a clear water rinse and a complete drying. Attention walls should always be washed from the bottom up to avoid dirty drips. - If cracks are visible on the surface to be painted, it will open with a triangular scraper and reseal carefully to the coating, and finish by sanding, once the dry coating. If the cracks are too important because " alive " (Due to variations in materials, they then receive the entire thickness of the plaster or wall), it is conceivable to put a glass cloth composed of very strong fibers and presented in rolls, prior to painting. The cracks will be much longer to reappear. Please note that the first layer of paint applied to a glass cloth must always be an acrylic painting that will not damage the coating. If you opt for this choice, avoid paper to paint reliefs and settle you a smooth surface, always reliable. Latest of painted paper, support for new arises like wallpaper and replaces the sandpaper. Smooth, it offers the possibility to apply a layer of paint on top, single or effect. - If the old paint is peeling, it will remove the loose paint with a stiff wire brush and then sand the surface with a medium-grit sandpaper, then fine grain.

Pitfall # 3: miss along the way paint (or buy too!)

What's more annoying than being in painting classes in action or being forced to return to the store the jar of 10 liters which remains on our hands? To avoid this kind of inconvenience, only one solution: carefully calculate the number of liters needed by the calculator paint Cotemaison.fr.

Before you jump into the site, here are a few golden rules: - Even if your paint is indicated monolayer for a beautiful result that meets your expectations, count two coats of paint. - Lack of experience, we tend to overload the brush and thus consume more. Look a little wider and round above the prompts. - Better to have a pot too much to miss painting a Sunday afternoon, started the site ...

And for those who want a calculation to measure, here's the method explained: - Measure the perimeter of the room by cutting openings (doors, windows). - Multiply by the ceiling height, divided by the yield indicated in the pot, then multiply by the number of layers to ask. Example: my part has a perimeter (5m + 7m) x 2 = 24m x 2.50m ceiling height = 60 m2. If the yield per liter indicated on the pot is 12m2 per liter, is divided by 12 = 60 5 liters x 2 layers = 10 liters. Is rounded to 11.5 liters for comfort.

Does this seem insurmountable? Arm yourself with your most disarming smile and show the dimensions of your room to a seller. It will help you out some ...

Pitfall # 4: using unsuitable equipment to paint a wall

Rollers too fine, brushes that lose their hair ... A low-end hardware or unsuited to the quality of paint you will complicate the task. You will spend more time painting, the result will risk being irregular, it will be impossible to use them again, there will no doubt sagging and unsightly splashes.

A good brush should be tapered and have long securely fastened to the handle hair, it is better to choose raw wood (instead of plastic or painted wood) for better grip. Better use of synthetic bristles when painted with an aqueous emulsion-based paint, said water-based paint. However, wool and silk are recommended when using solvent paint, alkyd said. Again, do not hesitate to ask the sellers specialty stores, they will direct you to the right products.

Rolls-pile will be reserved for bright lacquers and paints, models with short or medium length hair will be perfect for satin and matte, anti-drops will be essential for ceilings. Finally, a large enough pan together with a grid will drain the excess paint before moving the roller. For baseboards and all flat surfaces, it is best to use flat brushes. However, use round brushes to paint the moldings and wall corners. As for the radiators, the corners are not easy to access, they will make it mandatory to use special brushes, elbow and long sleeve.

On your list of accessories to be a good painter, be sure to note: good protective tape to provide in sufficient quantities, a good ladder to not break the figure and white spirit and other cleaning products as the painting.

Pitfall # 5: Get started without having tried his mural

Paint yourself: the 10 pitfalls to avoid

Dulux Valentine

The choice of the color of a painting always proves tricky. What shade adopt out where the place, how it fits together to the room and it creates the right mood? These questions require real reflection. Recently, virtual simulators and color charts are used to test the colors at home. The rendering is often artificial and far from offering the delicacy of colors and halftones. Hence the need to check at home the tone selected using samples before embarking on big jobs. The quality paints, as Farrow&Ball or Resource, and recently the DIY stores such as Leroy Merlin or brands such as Dulux Valentine, offer for sale of small pots called 100ml " testers " that can be a pretty fair idea of the desired shade. Rather than applying the tester directly on the wall or part painting, better carry out tests on a white cardboard 50x50 cm, and then placing it in different places in the room and at different times of the day including night by electric light.

These preliminary tests prove essential when one wishes to apply halftone or light tones, which undergo more than strong colors the influences of the environment and that can actually change appearance depending on the circumstances. Same when we want to combine two or three colors of paint, either in monochrome or in contrast. This precaution can actually save you time and money.

Trap # 6: neglecting the step of "undercoat"

If one does not care to an undercoat before application of the paint, such portion may harm adhere to the support, or being absorbed by the porous wall, which will " to drink " painting and require you to increase the number of coats required.

There are sub-layer, which is also called " primary attachment " adapted to all media that can be painted: - On the walls: one can use cheap paint, but the ideal is to opt for a primary solvent in stain-power. Warning to respect the instructions of the manufacturers regarding the drying time. - The metal: use a sub-layer protecting against corrosion and facilitating the attachment of the paint. If the metal is rusty, you will find sub-layers to paint on such a surface. - The radiators: there are special sub-layers of heat resistant. Be sure to apply them on radiators off. - On PVC, tiling, melamine: you will find sub-layers reserved for smooth surfaces, allowing the painting to hang on these very special materials. Without this preliminary precaution, the paint is likely to ignore.

Zoom: epoxy resin. Today Resinence revolutionized painting with its range of resin paint. This paint allows to repaint all media (credenza, soils, ...). We first apply a coat of paint (many colors) and a resin that hardens and becomes resistant. Very simple to use, it is also odorless.

Trap # 7: confuse oil paint and water-based paint

" The oil painting is much more complicated but it is more beautiful than the water-based paint "... The old adage lived! Lets see the differences between oil painting and watercolor.

Oil or alkyd. The painting " Oil " is called in the language pro " glycero ". A solvent-based to facilitate the application, it is particularly appreciated for its painters " tense ", Resistance and durability. This is also the washable paints. It is however subject to new regulations because it is polluting. Its smell is strong and tenacious and solvent fumes can be harmful. In addition, it is likely to yellow with age, and its drying time is long enough between two layers.

Watercolor and acrylic. Acrylic paint, said " water color ", Is odorless and virtually contains little organic solvents harmful to the environment. Above all, there are now excellent Language @ acrylics in terms of rendering and texture. Easy to apply, it spreads easily, dries quickly and holds in any medium. It is washable and tools can be cleaned with water. His only fault: it is weaker than its " rival " glycerophthalic.

And that's not all ! Youngest paint radius, alkyd aqueous emulsion has the advantages of alkyd (resistance and tense appearance, high coverage) without its drawbacks (no smell, shorter drying, no yellowing). Tip: for not choosing an inadequate quality, ask yourself the following questions: are we going to paint the walls yourself? Are sensitive people may inhale paint? The work will be carried out while they are already living here? If the answer is yes to all three questions, we unhesitatingly opt for a painting in aqueous emulsion.

Matt, satin, gloss ... Not easy to navigate among these three finishes! Yet it is better to choose the right, if not, beware of misses.

Paint yourself: the 10 pitfalls to avoid

The Little Greene

- Matt paints: they hide minor imperfections in the support and appear very likely, because of their powdery texture and made deep and sober. Yes ... They are generally only washable and non-washable, therefore inappropriate for busy rooms, kids rooms or wet rooms like the kitchen and bathroom. - The gloss paints or lacquers: they have the power to enlarge the spaces reflecting light and are particularly easy to clean. But beware: they do not forgive any imperfections of the support and require three or four layers at least for a perfected. Reserved for perfectionists! - The satin. The most universal of paint remains satin finish, suitable for all spaces and all media.

Question style remains to choose between smooth paint and paint effects. The latter, which was thought outdated, now experiencing a second wind. Manufacturers are working on styles in the zeitgeist (patinated, country, tadelakt ...) adorning the wall otherwise without much complicate the task. Carried away by soaring wallpaper, paint effect also creates a practical side. The paint function allows a piece of magnetic wall or blackboard for hanging magnets or write small words ...

Pitfall # 9: put too much paint, or not enough

Not easy to dose the right amount of paint when repainting a wall, furniture, doors ... However, if you put too much paint on a roll and we did not spin enough, we risk to sag or unsightly projections. And if, on the contrary, we do not care enough his sleeve, the paint layer will be insufficient, the roll passage traces will be visible and the paint will dry too quickly.

The golden rules for right mix paint and work in the state of the art: - Mix the paint before use, thicker deposits still forming the pot bottom and risking making lumps. To do this, use a piece of wood, a wand or " mixer ", A tool that fits Mandarin electric drills. - Do not soak the roll than half in the paint and remove the excess with the grille.- Although apply duct tape before applying the paint to prevent overflow. For those who abhor this preparatory work, here's a little trick unverified house ... Cut in half an onion and rub against the surface to not paint. It appears that the onion has repellent properties to the paint! - Ensure that the paint does not accumulate at both ends of the roll. - If spilled: If the paint is still wet, simply crossing a sudden roll to spread the paint. If it is dry, it will sand and apply a new coat of paint.

Pitfall # 10: paint in bad weather conditions

Too hot, too cold, too wet ... Yes, strange as it sounds, the weather can affect the performance of paints. Be careful if you decide to paint your interior so in winter when heating your future apartment is not yet in use! In cold weather and high humidity, the paint will be difficult to enforce. It will be sticky and the drying time will be longer. With drafts a windy weather, the opportunity will be given to the dust settling on the wet paint.

And if you take your brushes in the heat? Not good either, because above 30 degrees, the drying time is too fast, it can have a negative impact on the durability of the film.

Last but not to be overlooked: ventilation, especially if you are using the oil-based paint. Indeed, the vapors from the solvent-based paints are not recommended nor for pregnant women or for children. Open wide the windows and do not hesitate, even if you are a consenting adult to wear a protective mask.
